Residents along Ann Street in West Reading were shaken up after hearing it was their neighbor, Marlin Long, 68, who was hit and killed by a car Monday afternoon on his birthday.
"That is really a shame I had no idea it was him," said neighbor Lori Barnhard.
"It is very tragic. It is a shame. Very sad," said neighbor Kathleen Frymoyer.
Neighbors tell us Marlin would often walk across South Fifth Avenue during his five years of working at Reading Hospital and most recently to visit his wife in Manor Care. He was actually on the way home from visiting her Monday afternoon when he walked across the street and was hit by a car.
"I saw him walking every morning on his way to work and I would say good morning to him," said Frymoyer.
Marlin and his wife both have special needs, however neighbors say that never stopped them from working hard.
"He had a full time job and he was really really proud of himself that he got to go to work every day and he managed to hold it together. He was a really nice man. He always waived. He was kind," said Barnhard.
Officials tell us Marlin's wife became a patient at the Manor Care facility after breaking her hip. She is also in the early stages of Alzheimer's and was very upset to hear of her husband's death.
The coroner says Marlin died of head and chest injuries. Police ruled his death an accident.
"Oh I am just devastated. We are going to have to do something. We are going to get together as a block and we will do something for him for sure," said Barnhard.
