Nationwide Easter spending holds the line at 2012 amounts

Easter is second only to Halloween as the most popular candy-eating occasion. At Premise Maid in Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County, the holiday means more customers walking in the door.
"There's five rooms filled with everything you could imagine for an Easter basket: bunnies, eggs, malted milk eggs, jelly beans," explained owner Joe Damiano.
Everyone has their own sweet tooth or two to buy for. The National Retail Federation estimates the holiday will generate $17.2 billion in spending nationwide, with people forking over about $20 for candy.
"Of course solid chocolate bunnies," said Bridget Sullivan. "We have six kids and they like solid chocolate bunnies."
"You have to have anything peanut butter, especially in my house," said Jessica Trentalange with a smile.
Most of people's spending will actually go towards food for a family brunch or dinner. Easter is traditionally known as the kickoff to spring.
"I need spring in my life. I'm so sick of winter, " added Mo Swanson. "I'm so sick of it being cold."
It's estimated most Americans will spend about $10 on flowers for the holiday--something roadside tents are more than happy to help you out with.
"I grabbed some daffodils and two sets of hyacinths," said Swanson.
"A lot of customers have been coming in for flowers," shared Cathy Eckert who runs the tent. "But we assume it will start picking up over the weekend."
The National Retail Federation also found shoppers are being thriftier this year, with 63.4% shopping at discount stores.
