Mifflin girls, Tulpehocken boys soccer advance at states
With the election coverage Tuesday night, we didn't get a chance to show a few Berks soccer teams kick off their hunt for a state title.
The District 3 AAA champion Governor Mifflin girls squad laced up Tuesday night looking to take their first step to the promised land.
The Mustangs had to deal with CB East up at Tulpehocken. Led by Emily Gingrich, Mifflin got it done.
Gingrich assisted on Governor Mifflin's first goal, a lob that found the head of Sienna Zittle.
CB East eventually tied it at one, but Gingrich knifed through a couple defenders and blasted in the winning goal off the post with two minutes left in the game.
It was Gingrich's 100th goal in what's been an outstanding career with the Mustangs.
Governor Mifflin advances to the second round of the bracket where they will meet rival Wilson West Lawn on Saturday. The Bulldogs beat Downingtown West 2-1.
In Hamburg, the Tulpehocken boys took on Saucon Valley in the first round of the boys AA bracket.
The District champs didn't disappoint.
Brandon Daub had two goals, Robert Ekvall had the decisive third, and the Trojans defeated Saucon Valley 3-2.
Tulpehocken will meet Lewisburg in the second round Saturday.
Also in soccer Tuesday, the Wilson boys and Tulpehocken girls notched victories, while the Wyomissing girls lost.
In field hockey, Twin Valley and Oley Valley advanced with victories. Hamburg's season ended with a loss.
Finally, in volleyball, Exeter fell to Hempfield 3-1 after a 19-win season.
