TRENTON, N.J. -

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez's job approval poll numbers are up slightly from a five-year low amid ethics questions involving a major donor.

A Quinnipiac University poll shows 40 percent of registered New Jersey voters that were surveyed approve of the job the two-term Democrat is doing compared to 37 percent who do not. A 41 percent negative approval rating reflected a 15-point drop in a February survey.

New Jersey voters are divided 35 to 36 percent on whether Menendez is honest and trustworthy, with 29 percent undecided.

"The fall-out from those scandal stories has wounded Sen. Robert Menendez, but it looks like he has stopped the bleeding and even recovered a little," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Fifty-three percent said the issue is worth investigating, while 30 percent said it's politically motivated.

The telephone survey of 1,129 registered voters has a sampling error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
