Woman injures self, 5 children, in crash

LANSFORD, Pa. -

A woman suffered a medical emergency causing her to lose control of her van and crash into three parked vehicles, police said.

Thursday, after 6 p.m., Laura Demaio, 29, of Coledale, had a medical incident while driving in Lansford, Carbon County, on Route 209 north, also known as the 800 block of East Patterson in the borough.

Demaio lost control of her van and hit three parked vehicles, police said.  Two of the vehicles ended up on the sidewalk.  The third hit a home at 834 E. Patterson, but did not cause any obvious structural damage.

In the van with Demaio were five young children ages 1, 4, 5, 9, and 10-years-old, police said.  The 10-year-old child and Demaio were flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital.  The other four children were taken to a local hospital.

It is unclear if Demaio was related to any of the children.  Police said they believed everyone was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
