Man who swindled Walmart cashier caught after he's chased into Pa., police say

A shoplifting suspect being pursued by New Jersey police into Pennsylvania was found to be the same person who swindled a Walmart cashier two months ago, when he was taken into custody, officials said.
Alfredo Cancel-Maisonet was caught in the 4900 block of Freemansburg Avenue, Bethlehem Twp., Northampton Co., at about 3:15 p.m. Monday, fleeing from Pohatcong Twp., N.J., police who wanted him in connection with a shoplifting incident, officials said.
A Bethlehem Township officer recognized Cancel-Maisonet as a suspect in a theft by deception case at the Walmart at 3929 Nazareth Pike in February, and when Cancel-Maisonet was shown a photo of the suspected scam artist, he replied, "Yeah, that's me."
Cancel-Maisonet's swindle at the Walmart on Feb. 22 was caught on surveillance video, according to court papers.
Cancel-Maisonet is seen asking for a $100 bill from the cashier and promises to give her five $20 bills, officials said.
But when Cancel-Maisonet is handed the $100 bill, he pockets the five $20 bills and instead gives the cashier a $10 bill, telling her he gave her the $10 bill instead of the $100 bill, officials said.
Cancel-Maisonet then demands five $20 bills, and the cashier complies, officials said.
After he was arrested, Cancel-Maisonet was found with a device used to deactivate store security anti-theft tags, officials said.
Cancel-Maisonet, 33, of 1059 Livingston St., Bethlehem, was arraigned on
charges of theft by deception and possessing an instrument of crime and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $15,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. April 22.
