Reading PD searching for group involved in shooting

Reading Police are investigating after a man was assaulted and shot by a group of men Friday evening.

Gunfire rang out at about 7:15 in the 1600 block of Cotton Street.

Police said Tarik Eugene Billups, 31, of Reading was leaving a friends house on Cotton Street when he was approached by a group of men. Police said the men tried to hit him with a bottle, then four of them began punching and beating Billups.  They said after assaulting him, police said a fifth man walked up to Billups and shot him.

Billups was taken to Reading Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police are looking for four Hispanic males and one black male in their early to mid 20's.

Police at the scene tell us that the victim was shot after an argument and a friend frantically tried to save the man's life.

"I tried to rip his shirt to see how many times he was shot because they say he was shot," said Lorri Grim.  "Another man was smacking him in the face like 'come on... please... please!'  I gave him CPR.  It went so quick.  The police were up the street and so they came right away."

An autopsy on Billups is scheduled for Sunday, according to the Berks County Coroner's office.

Anybody with information is asked to contact Reading Police or Crime Alert: Berks County.  The number is 877-373-9913.
