BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

A man beat up his girlfriend on Valentine's Day after becoming angry because she was leaving him, officials said.

Jorge O. Avila punched the woman in the body several times, pulled her by the hair and dragged her through his home at 1115 Lynnhurst Circle, Bethlehem, before taking her outside and shoving her to the ground at about 6:10 p.m. Thursday, officials said.

The victim told police she and Avila were drinking beer and watching TV when he attacked her, officials said, adding that police found the woman outside Avila's home with a bruise below her left eye, bruises on both arms, scrapes on her back and brush burns on both knees.

Avila, 24, was arraigned on assault and harassment charges and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $5,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. Feb. 27.
