BERN TWP., Pa. -

A Berks County nurse is not only in the business of saving lives but saving Christmas for kids.

For the past four years, nurse Mary Galantino has budgeted 15 percent of her salary on gifts for kids in the pediatric department at St. Joseph Medical Center. This year, she spent $3,500 for the pediatric department and the playroom.

"I make sure that I have enough to live on, to pay my school loans, to pay for my car, and that everything additional is given to the kids, if I can afford it," said Galantino.

It turns out, Galantino spent more money on gifts this year than she has in previous years because she worked overtime in the cancer department.

"I can't believe it, you know, all that she's done for the kids, video games, toys. She's replenished some toys in our playroom. It's just awesome," said Karen Sponagle, clinical coordinator for maternal health.

Galantino said she gives so much because she was an only child and never had the opportunity to watch brothers or sisters open Christmas gifts.

"It's just awesome to see them get so excited and open up the gifts and see what's new that they can play with," said Mary.
