Local bakery keeps Fastnacht Day tradition alive

EGYPT, Pa. -

If you're a fan of fastnachts, Tuesday was the day you were waiting for.

It was Fastnacht Day, and the sweet treats were flying off the shelves at the Bakery Nook in Egypt, Lehigh Co.

Barry the Baker said he started frying up the potato doughnuts around 1 a.m., and he'll be selling them all day.

Fastnacht Day is a German tradition that's celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday.

"The tradition of Fat Tuesday, getting ready for Lent, getting rid of all the sweets and sugars and flour and ingredients out of your kitchen for the holiday."

Barry said his bakery sells about 10 dozen doughnuts on a typical day, but on Fastnacht Day he expects to sell about 350 dozen.
