The news of the newly elected Pope Francis has many Catholics in our area excited especially since this is the first pope from Latin America.
At St. Bernard's on Davis Street in Easton, which has a mass in Spanish every Wednesday at 7p.m., the news has every parishioner WFMZ spoke with feeling very blessed.
“The happiness and peace that I feel comes from the fact that he is the first Latin American pope. I feel this means a peace and something very big for the world,” said Rosmira Monslave.
“I see his face and I see someone with humility, and I believe this will be something very beautiful for all Hispanics and for the entire world,” Jose Castillo said.
At St. Anthony's of Padua just down the street, churchgoers say it's nice to see a change.
"I think it's good we have a pope from another country other than western Europe and it's nice to have a pope from the southern Hemisphere," said Ken Weiland.
" I'm happy that I think they have looked deeply at who they were going to choose and pick someone who's not exactly European is going now to bring the Catholic church closer together again," Ernest Kovacs said.
Even though many experts foresaw a non-European pope, the age factor didn't seem to play a role.
"I would've liked somebody younger; however, the pool that they were choosing from probably was not as young as I would like to see," said Rosemarie Kovacs.
Pope Benedict's age did cause some controversy since he was elected at 78 and many were thinking the next pope would be younger.
Pope Francis however is 76 years young.
Age aside, Catholics WFMZ spoke with seem optimistic. "We're just looking forward to see what he has to say and what the direction he takes the church now I think, " said Ernest Kovacs.
