BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

Students in the Bethlehem Area School District are reading new books while remembering a police officer killed in the line of duty.

Students in Freemansburg Elementary School took part in "Cops 'N' Kids" Literacy program Thursday morning in honor of fallen officer Robert Lasso.

Lasso was killed back in August of 2011 after responding to a call at a home in Freemansburg.

Lasso's father, step-mother and other family members were at the event.

With help from the Lasso's and Cops 'N' Kids more than 800 books were given to the students.

"To be part of something like this is hard to explain," said Donald Lasso. "The loss of Robert is so hard to take, but things like this make it better."

Each book has a bookplate in memory of officer Lasso.

Many of the kids asked the family members to sign the books.
