KUTZTOWN, Pa. -

Kutztown University held a welcoming Wednesday night for Latino and minority students.

The school's president, Javier Cevallos, says 20 percent of the freshman class is made up of minorities.

“We are really happy that our Latino population is growing in terms of students, faculty and staff and we think it's a great opportunity to say welcome and that's what we're trying to do today,” said Cevallos.

Wednesday night's 'Bienvenido' event was to introduce new students to university organizations as well as encourage networking.

Cevallos says this year is the biggest in minority enrollment which includes over 200 Latino freshman and the future, according to Cevallos, rides on their shoulders.

“Our society is becoming more and more diverse. By the year 2040, we're going to be a minority-majority country. If as a society we're not educated, if we don't have people from all diverse backgrounds succeeding in education, we're going to fail...so education is crucial and that's why we're so excited about having so many new Latino kids on campus,” Cevallos said.
