Residents at KidsPeace's Orchard Hill Campus are going full speed ahead in an annual Soapbox Derby.

Residents at KidsPeace's Orchard Hill Campus are going full speed ahead in an annual Soapbox Derby. Teams made up of 56 residents were ready to race.

"A lot of our kids struggle with a lot of issues," explained Charlie Schaff. "To see them be able to come out today and have a great time is actually a whole lot of fun."

The cars come pre-built, but teams can use paint, duct tape and cardboard to personalize them.

"We give them a car a month before and it gets pretty crazy," added Schaff. "They hide cars, they don't want people to see them, so it gets pretty competitive."

Noel Gadomski dressed up as Santa to race her team's Christmas themed vehicle.

"We just thought it would be really cool to do a Christmas in July," smiled Gadomski.

Their sleigh along with three other cars were in the running. The one with the fastest combined time was the winner. Organizers say the competition is all about team work and having a good time.

"I didn't think it was going to be this much fun," shared Gadomski.

"We had some fun, we came here for fun, had a great time," described Jacob McMullen.

"It's really great to see our kids come out and have fun and laugh and joke because then it takes some of the stress away from us," said Schaff.

Brown Daub Kia sponsored the event. We're told KidsPeace plans to do it again next year.
