Political rookie Kathleen Kane has become the first woman and first Democrat to be elected Pennsylvania attorney general. She defeated Republican David Freed, the district attorney of Cumberland County.
Kane, 46, spent more than 12 years as a Lackawanna County assistant district attorney and proved to be a scrappy campaigner in her first bid for elective office. The Scranton resident beat former U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy in the Democratic primary in April.
Freed, 42, stressed his 15 years of prosecutorial experience, including seven years in his present job. The Camp Hill resident was unopposed in the primary.
In the three-way race for Pennsylvania auditor general, Eugene DePasquale, a Democratic state legislator from York County, has won.
DePasquale, 41, served as a deputy secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection in the Rendell administration.
His opponents were Republican John Maher, a state representative who ran on his standing as the only certified public accountant in the race, and Libertarian Party candidate Betsy Summers, a Wilkes-Barre businesswoman.
Maher, 53, of Allegheny County, founded a Pittsburgh public accounting firm before he entered the Legislature in 1997.
Democratic incumbent Rob McCord has been elected to a second four-year term as Pennsylvania state treasurer.
Republican Diana Irey Vaughan, a county commissioner from western Pennsylvania, was defeated.
McCord, 53, is a former venture capitalist from Bryn Mawr. He was elected in 2008 in his first election campaign. He made headlines in 2010 when he helped force then-Gov. Ed Rendell, a fellow Democrat, to trim a $1 billion package by hundreds of millions.
Vaughan, 50, has been a Washington County commissioner since 1995. This was her first statewide campaign.
