A 10-year-old Schuykill County girl has been reunited with her family after police say she was kidnapped Thursday by a man claiming to be her father.
A chilling phone call was the first clue that led police to 39-year-old Peter Tarbox.
Neighbors of the little girl say she is a kind and friendly child. They are happy Alexandria Long is on her way home but police are still looking for a motive.
Police say Alexandria Long was playing at Gordon Park on Thursday afternoon when something went terribly wrong.
"She told them that she was going to the park," said Patrolman Shawn Butler the responding officer. "She was going to play. They looked out, they're not able to see her at all, they get worried start walking around the vicinity of the apartment complex they live in. They don't find her."
Investigators say Alexandria's mom checked the phone and noticed that the last number on the phone was that of the mother's ex-boyfriend Peter Tarbox.
So she dialed the number.
"The male picks up the phone and says yes I have your daughter and I have no intentions on bringing her back," added Butler.
Others at the park recalled seeing a man walking around and asking questions about Alexandria.
There was a guy that asked us if we saw her, but we didn't see her," said Renae Warcola.
Police issued an Amber Alert and six hours later an officer in New York spotted Tarbox's vehicle at a gas station.
"It was actually a police officer from this Gouverneur Police Department who had an Amber application on his start phone," said Butler.
Police arrested Peter Tarbox and his mother 55-year-old Annette Williams.
Alexandria Long was reunited with her family at 10:00 Friday morning.
Police are still looking for a motive.
"The alleged father, Tarbox, claims this is his biological daughter," added Butler. "The mother adamantly denies and refuses that to be so. I don't know for sure."
Now the FBI has taken over the case.
Investigators tell us for now, Peter Tarbox, and his mother remain behind bars in New York.
