WERNERSVILLE, Pa. -

A man about to be served a warrant took his own life after sheriff's deputies showed up at his home Wednesday, officials said.

The deputies went to the home in the first block of West Penn Avenue in Wernersville around 10:30 a.m. to serve a resident with a misdemeanor warrant for driving under the influence, said Berks County Sheriff Eric Weaknecht.

One of the deputies reported hearing the bolt action sound of a rifle or shotgun and immediately requested police backup, Weaknecht said.

Officers dressed in tactical gear converged on the area and set up at least a one-block perimeter around the home as they tried to establish contact with the man inside.

Authorities eventually entered the home shortly before noon and found the man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Weaknecht said.

No one else was injured.
