A Berks County police officer was taken to the hospital Thursday morning after he was hit by a car driven by a fleeing suspect, said police.
Hubert Budd, of Tamaqua, Schuylkill Co., was arrested after he used his car to hit a Bern Township police officer, said police.
According to investigators, Budd, 19, drove a 2007 Toyota sedan, with three other people inside, into the Top Star parking lot on Rout 183 in Bern Township around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.
Two officers were already at the store. They observed what looked like drug activity and approached the group, said police.
Police checked the identification of one member in the group, and that person ran away, said police.
"At that point, the individual that was inside the store bolted from the store, ran out to the vehicle, yelled at the driver, 'Go go! Get out of here," said Det. Sgt. Michael Hoffert, Bern Twp. Police Dept.
Ofc. Douglass Brown positioned himself at the exit, told the driver to stop, but Budd hit the gas and drove right toward him, said police.
"Ofc. Brown was fortunate to be able to jump to the side, but the vehicle did still strike him on his side with the fender and rear view mirror," said Hoffert.
69 News spoke with Brown in May 2011 after he rescued a man from a burning home in the township. On Thursday, he was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center for bumps and bruises.
A broadcast was sent out to law enforcement, and Budd was found a few hours later in Schuylkill County by Pennsylvania State Police from the Frackville station and by Tamaqua police.
"You give an officer your operator's license and decide to take off, but really there's no sense of it because we're going to know who you are," said Hoffert.
According to police, Budd was already facing drug charges. Now, he is charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest or other law enforcement, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.
