Hospital to review safety procedures following LVH shooting

Lehigh Valley Hospital is reviewing its safety procedures following Tuesday's murder -suicide on the the hospital's Hospice wing at its 17th and Chew location.
According to the hospital, no other person was injured during today's incident, however the whole thing has many wondering what actions if any should the hospital take to prevent anything like this from happening again.
What happened Tuesday afternoon inside the hospice unit of Lehigh Valley Hospital at 17th and Chew streets is not only horrifying but tragic.
"It's a love story, the elderly gentleman could not bear to see his wife suffering and the family I believe have observed that he just could not envision living without her," said Senior Vice President of Operations Jim Geiger.
However the fact that the alleged shooter, 86 year old Elwood Osman was able to get through the doors with a gun has Geiger reviewing security procedures with police.
"We've actually been in active consultation with our law enforcement colleagues about ways that they would recommend that we can enhance security at all of our campus facilities so that dialogue is active and ongoing right now," said Geiger.
Soon after the incident visitors, who were inside the hospital were also asking why no one was alerted that there was a shooting inside the building.
But Geiger says it's not hospital policy to alert the public unless it's absolutely necessary.
"We have an alerting process called a code-45 and that alerts our incident command and management staff," he said. "We assess the situation first and then we determine whether or not we'll be able to safely protect our patients if we had to evacuate, obviously in this incident we did not"
Geiger adds extra security measures will be taken on the hospice unit as well as frequent patrolling throughout the hospital until further measures are implemented.
