A murder suspect who was nabbed at a Florida casino has been brought back to Montgomery County.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. -

A man arrested in Florida several days after he allegedly killed his girlfriend has been returned to Pennsylvania to face murder charges.

Edwin Carrero is now being held without bail in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

Carrero, 32, was nabbed in Broward Co., Fla., on Feb. 7, five days after his girlfriend, Alicia Schmidt, was found dead at the bottom of her basement stairs inside her home on Cherry Street in Pottstown, Montgomery Co., officials said. An autopsy determined she had been strangled.

Carrero called his ex-wife the same morning and told her he may have killed Schmidt, 31, by choking her and pushing her down the basement steps, police said. Schmidt's two children, ages 7 and 12, were found unharmed in second floor bedrooms.

Police said they tracked Carrero through the use of Schmidt's stolen bank debit card, which they said was used 28 times between Pottstown on Feb. 1 and Ruther Glen, Va., on Feb. 3, when it was eventually declined.

An officer in Broward Co., Fla., then encountered Carrero on Feb. 7 in Schmidt's stolen car in the parking garage of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, police said.

Carrero is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on Mar. 22.
