BUSHKILL TWP., Pa. -

A man badly injured a woman's son by throwing a can of soda in his face while the son was quarreling with his mom outside a church, officials said.

Guy J. Murphy II broke the nose of Jeff D. Fry and knocked out three of his his teeth after throwing a sealed 16-ounce can of Mountain Dew at him outside the Bushkill United Methodist Church, 1330 Church Road, Bushkill Twp., Northampton Co., at about 12:10 p.m. Saturday, officials said.

Fry told police he was arguing with his mother when Murphy came out of the church and began yelling at him, and then threw the aluminum soda can at his head and  punched him in the face when he fell to the ground, before droving off in a blue car, officials said.

Lisa Hess, a woman who turned out to be Murphy's mother, told police Fry "had gotten what he deserved" because he was yelling and cursing at his mother, adding that she did not know the identity of the man who attacked Fry, officials said.

The investigating officer knew Hess was Murphy's mom, that he had been involved in a similar incident a few days before, and that he drive a blue car, so he arranged a photo lineup on Sunday and Fry identified Murphy as his attacker, officials said.

Murphy admitted to the attack later in the day at headquarters, officials added.

Murphy, 20, of 328 Fairview Ave., Wind Gap, was arraigned on charges of aggravated and simple assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and harassment and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $10,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. April 1.
