Demolition begins to make way for CVS pharmacy in Mount Penn
Demolition is under way in Mount Penn. Three buildings are being torn down to make way for a drug store, and some said they'll miss the familiar sights.
Mow Mow, a pet duck, lived for two years in the repair shop for Leinbach's Hardware. Scott Hoffa said he used to go there all the time.
"This pet duck was pretty awesome. He likes food. He likes people," described Scott Hoffa. "It's pretty funny. I like Mow Mow."
The demolition of Leinbachs, the former Wachovia Bank and the old post office is making way for a CVS pharmacy.
"It's upsetting and depressing. I'm going to miss it," said Hoffa, who watched the demolition from across the street.
And so did Emmy Bryan.
"It's very devastating," said Bryan. "It's heart breaking. It's like a major loss."
Bryan said she's called Mount Penn home for 30 years.
"I like that there's still some small businesses," said Bryan. "I'm a small business person. I don't believe in big corporations."
But that's exactly what will take the place of the old post office, the Leinbach's Hardware store and the bank.
"It's a shame to see something like Leinbach's. It's been here, a family-owned business, go away," said Ryan DeWald. "It's also something else to see a CVS, 24 hours killed by convenience."
DeWald owns Skyline Bicycles and is the vice president of the Mount Penn Area Business Association, which he hopes will get a boost by the new business.
"I think CVS will definitely help in some way, some how to build our community a little bit stronger, provide a service," said DeWald.
But many onlookers weren't focusing on what will be, but what won't be.
"It's upsetting for everybody else," said Hoffa.
