Decision on park in Upper Saucon put on hold

The Upper Saucon Township Board of Supervisors tabled a vote to approve an inter-municipal agreement with the Southern Lehigh School District on a new park near the Hopewell Elementary School for further clarification during Monday night’s board meeting.

The proposed park, outlined by the name “Karr Property Field Layout Plan” on an overhead projector during the meeting, would allocate township and school district distinctive portions of land for a park that would include numerous athletic fields, such as soccer, baseball and football, along with walking trails.

It was that last point which perplexed Vice Chairman John Gilda Jr., who wanted some justification for the types of fields and the number of fields that would be constructed there.

“I would like more information about the percentage of these facilities dedicated to playing fields,” he said.

Chairman Stephen Wagner agreed with Gilda's opinion. And after lengthy debate between all five supervisors they instructed the administration for that clarification from the school district. Wagner said he hoped that clarification would not be lengthy and it is not, the issue could be placed on the agenda for the next supervisors’ meeting in early April.

In other business, the supervisors authorized a grant agreement with Lehigh County accepting a nearly $232,000 grant under the county’s Green Future Fund Program for the construction of phase two of the Saucon Rail Trail. The funds received by the county must be matched in the same amount by the township.

After the board voted 5-0 on that measure, they then awarded the bid for phase two construction to Semmel Excavating in the amount just over $464,000. The phase two portion of the trail goes from the Township Park to East Landis Street.

The board also approved a request from DeSales University to waive the subdivision and land development process in connection with the proposed Brisson/Chappuis Sculpture Plaza.
