More than 100,000 people are currently on the national transplant list.
One local woman is glad that her father is no longer one of them.
In fact she went above and beyond to get him off the list.
It's the final day of the Transplant Symposium at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest.
Sitting in front of the crowd and sharing his story is Dr. Francis Salerno.
Salerno, 66, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of five. He lost his eyesight 37 years ago.
And his kidney was failing.
“I didn't ask anyone to donate, but I mentioned to them that I was in need of a donation," he said.
“I don't think the words came out of his mouth before I was already saying what can I do," said Alison Salerno. "Where do I start.”
Salerno's daughter, Alison, decided to donate a kidney to her father.
April is national "Donate A Life Month".
Currently over 100,000 people are waiting for a transplant.
“I'll be honest it's been a rocky road. I mean it's had many ups and downs. There is a lot of planning and a lot of unpredictability in it,” said Alison.
Since his original surgery here at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest, Dr. Salerno has had to have one additional surgery.
His daughter says she wouldn't change a thing because she has more time with her dad.
“Be able to go for a walk with him around the park, or just look forward to a summer vacation or something," she said. "I mean that's the biggest change is to know that he's going to be around a little bit while longer."
The hope is more people have a great story like the Salernos.
It doesn't have to be a family member, you can donate anonymously.
