Commuters in NJ head to work 1 week after Sandy
Residents on Long Beach Island are getting a first look at their homes Monday since they fled Sandy.
They must grab some of their essentials and leave again before 3 p.m. when the island closes. The Holgate and North Beach sections remain off limits because of damage.
In other storm news, officials say more gasoline is flowing. Rationing remains in effect in 12 counties, where motorists with odd number license plates can get gas today.
Roughly 800 of New Jersey's 2,400 schools are open.
Gov. Chris Christie has designated Monday to celebrate Halloween.
Utility crews are making progress restoring electricity in New Jersey.
There are fewer than 780,000 homes and businesses without service.
Public Service Electric & Gas says it has restored power to about 78 percent of its customers that have been without electricity. Another 375,000 are still waiting.
Jersey Central Power & Light is reporting 382,000 outages, mainly in Monmouth County. JCP&L says most should be back by Wednesday.
Orange & Rockland has fewer than 22,000 without service, mainly in Bergen County.
Atlantic City Electric has whittled the number down to 586, mostly in Atlantic County.
