A new group is trying to keep kids in the Lehigh Valley out of trouble.

A new group is trying to keep kids in the Lehigh Valley out of trouble.

"Communities That Care" held its first meeting Tuesday at Lehigh Carbon Community College in Schnecksville.

The program will be rolled out over the next three years in Coplay, Salisbury and Whitehall.

It'll be done in concert with local governments, schools, churches and other groups.

Organizers say the purpose is to keep kids from turning to crime by providing mentors in academics, the arts, and athletics.

"Really reaching out to young people who don't have the parenting or the guardians at home to show them the right path in life," said Whitehall mayor Ed Hozza.

Organizers say this is the first program of its kind in the Lehigh Valley but it has been successful elsewhere.
