ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

Allentown's Civic Theatre is getting ready to go digital.

Theater officials tell 69News they've raised 99 percent of the money needed to convert to a digital projection system.

At the end of 2011, movie studios announced they would no longer release films in 35 millimeter, so theater owners were stuck with two options--either convert to digital or close.

Michael Traupman, director for the Civic, says he expects the purchase and installation of the new equipment to be completed by April.

In the meantime, Traupman says they're okay for the short term for film supply, but he says the selection of available films on 35 mm is becoming limited.

Also facing digital conversion are the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks in Bethlehem.

While the cinemas already have digital projectors, the cinemas don't yet have the digital servers required to complete the conversion.

To help defray the costs of the conversion, ArtsQuest is hosting its first Oscar night party Sunday. The fundraiser will begin with a red carpet pre-show dinner reception before moving to the cinemas for an HD simulcast of the 85th Academy Awards at 8 p.m.
