Brian Conrad, Raymond Wertz busted in burglary spree in Berks

Two men were arrested Friday in connection with a rash of burglaries throughout Berks County.
Brian Conrad and Raymond Wertz began the theft spree in July and continued it through late December, targeting properties with scrap metal or copper rain gutters and down spouts, said state police.
Most of the thefts, police said, were committed during daytime hours. The suspects were attracted to properties that had scrap metal easily visible and accessible from public roads, police said.
A historic home in Oley Township was targeted for its copper down spouts, which dated back to 1896, police said.
The stolen scrap metal and other items were then taken to an address in Reading, where they were stored and prepared to be taken to area scrap metal dealers, said police, who noted that other items of value were prepared to be sold or pawned.
Investigators were able to recover some of the stolen items, including electronics, tools and jewelry.
The total value of the stolen items is more than $14,000; property damage is estimated to be between $2,000 and $5,000, said police, who detailed the thefts as listed below:
Bern Township: Theft of tool box from property in 2000 block of Bernville Road; theft of scrap metal from property in 2100 block of Bernville Road; theft of copper from renovated home in 2100 block of Cullum Drive.
Jefferson Township: Theft of scrap metal from International Union of Operating Engineers at 41 Derrr Rd.; theft of pressure washer from property in 600 block of Summer Mountain Road; theft of electronics and jewelry from property in the 300 block of Host Church Road.
Robeson Township: Theft of televisions, bow and 9mm rifle from storage units at Gibraltar Self-Storage, 3700 Main St.
North Heidelberg Township: Two burglaries of personal papers, jewelry and chainsaw from property in first block of Station Road; theft of power tools and construction equipment from property in the 2300 block of Brownsville Road; theft of power tools from property in the 200 block of Heidelberg Road.
Upper Tulpehocken Township: Theft of copper pipe from property in first block of Talbert Road.
Robesonia: Property in the 300 block of Oak Avenue burglarized three times for scrap metal.
Wernersville: Theft of copper down spouts from properties in the 200 block of West Penn Avenue and the 200 block of East Washington Street; theft of copper pipe/wire from property in the 300 block of East Penn Avenue.
South Heidelberg Township: Theft of copper down spouts from property in the 500 block of Hill Road.
Lower Heidelberg Township: Theft of scrap metal from property in the 400 block of North Church Road.
Alsace Township: Theft of copper down spouts from property in the 300 block of Skyline Drive.
Oley Township: Theft of copper down spouts from property in the first block of Water Street.
Conrad, 30, of Bernville, was committed to the Berks County Jail; Wertz, 25, also of Bernville, is being held in the Lancaster County Prison.
