Board tables possible plan to close elementary school

Hundreds of concerned parents packed Daniel Boone Area Middle School in Amity Township on Monday night, all worried about the future of their children.
Their first concern is the possible closing of Birdsboro Elementary Center (BEC). Board members are considering closing the school because it is too costly to replace the boilers.
"There is absolutely no reason to close that school whatsoever. Except for the fact that we do not want to invest the money to fix it, which is ridiculous," said parent Sharon Morris.
"It is a no-brainer as far as I am concerned. You fix the boilers," said parent Frank Acors.
Parents are concerned that closing BEC will extend the travel time to and from school for their children.
"It is never a good idea to put a child on a bus for an hour and half a day and see their grades improve. Bus time is non-productive learning time," said Birdsboro Mayor Joseph Peterson.
The board voted to table the replacement of the boilers until it can research more options.
The second issue at hand is district realignment. Instead of all three elementary schools having K-5th graders, each school would have certain grades.
The board also voted to table the realignment presentation.
"It is frustrating. We want to know what is going on. I have a second grader who could potentially be at two different schools for the next three years or two years," said parent Anjuli Aker.
At the end of the meeting, the board voted unanimously to further investigate the school closure issue. So, for the time being, that is off the table.
The realignment issue is still on the table and school board members said they will be considering that in the future.
