Bike shop break-in may be part of larger spree, police say

Some bike shop owners across the region are on edge following a rash of motorcycle and ATV thefts.
The most recent one happened at Evolution Powersports, located in the 1400 block of Ben Franklin Highway in Douglass Twp., Berks Co., police said.
"It's very disheartening that people can just break into your employment and take what's not theirs," said John Detweiler, the owner.
Detweiler said the criminals used a box truck to run over a fence and crash through a door. He said the thieves took off with three dirt bikes.
Detweiler's business was targeted just over a month ago, but that time, he said, the crooks rammed their getaway vehicle right through the front door. That time, he said two ATVs and a dirt bike were stolen, causing damages into the tens of thousands of dollars.
"It has me alarmed. It's tough to sleep at night anymore because you're wondering if they're going to break in again," Detweiler said.
Officials said Detweiler's story is not unique.
Authorities confirmed that several similar businesses have been burglarized in Berks, Lebanon and Schuylkill counties.
Detweiler said the crooks caused damages in excess of $30,000. Now, he just hopes the criminals face justice.
"It's about time that these guys get caught," Detweiler said.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage. Meanwhile, Detweiler said he has increased security measures and is considering changing location.
