Bicycling fall classic set for Sunday

The weather may be raw and rainy Sunday, but that won't stop plenty of cyclists from hitting the Pennsylvania countryside. "Bicycling" Magazine's Fall Classic runs through Lehigh and Berks counties. 69 News' John Craven hit the bike trail Saturday for a preview.
John said, "Wearing head-to-spandex is not exactly what I planned to do at work, but when you're climbing on a bike, you've got to have the proper gear."
The first step is getting the helmet on right.
"The helmet should always fit so there's no free play in the helmet, so your head shouldn't be able to accelerate or move side to side," said Brad Ford with Emmaus-based "Bicycling" Magazine.
The magazine's second annual Fall Classic runs all day Sunday.
"It's not a race; it's a fun ride," said Ford.
It's a ride that takes cyclists through the fall leaves and rolling Pennsylvania Dutch countryside of Lehigh and Berks counties. But don't think you have to be an expert like Ford to participate. Even novices can get in on the fun.
"There's four routes: 10, 25, 50, and 90 miles," said Ford.
The 10-mile ride circles around the Macungie area. The 25-mile ride heads into eastern Berks Co., and the 90-mile trek goes all the way south to Reading and back through the scenic Oley Valley.
"Ten miles is a distance anybody who can ride a bike can get on," said Ford. "You know, do 10 miles at the end, be happy that they went out and got some exercise in."
Sunday's forecast calls for rain and highs barely above 50, but Ford hopes an early start will save the day.
"Most of the rides look like they might be able to start dry," he said.
The Bicycling Fall Classic kicks off Sunday.
