Bethlehem opens phase two of the Skateplaza

There's more room for skaters to shred in Bethlehem.
The city cut the ribbon on phase two of the city skate park along route 412.
It's just one of fifty recreational facilities in the city.
Mayor John Callahan said at first opening the park was a controversial decision, but the people using the park have made it a city treasure.
The new addition adds more ramps and features with a 10,000 square foot addition to the Skakeplaza.
"It's been a long time coming," said Ralph Carp, director of parks in Bethlehem. "It's another step in the progression of what we hope to be just a tremendous amenity for the south side recreation of this city."
Phase 1 was completed in 2010.
Phase 2 cost more than $400,000 to complete.
It was funded through grant money and an investment that people using the park say they will take care of.
"Going for so long without something, to finally getting something that is amazing, you really just kind of feel that you need to take care of it," said Andrew Po, owner of Homebase Skate Shop.
"We have had almost zero problems here at the skate park," said John Callahan, mayor of Bethlehem. "And I think that is a tremendous testament to all of you and the kind of folks that you are and the fact that you respect and appreciate the park that this community built for you."
So now it's time for more tricks and a few falls while learning.
"It's great, it's amazing," added John Shanahan, a skater from Stroudsburg. "They're all like really good. It's something new to skate. It's always good."
The city is not done adding to the skate park.
This summer they will add bathrooms and a brick Pavillion both done with donated funds.
