Berks community on mission to save school

A Berks County community is on a mission to save an elementary school.
Nearly 200 folks attended a rally Sunday afternoon in hopes of keeping the Birdsboro Elementary Center open.
Parents, teachers, and students came together to create posters and sign a petition.
"We are trying to drum up some support for the meeting tomorrow," said Michele Myers, a teacher.
The Daniel Boone Area School Board voted last month to look into closing the school, putting the fate of about 400 students on the line.
According to district officials, enrollment numbers are falling while maintenance fees continue to climb.
Some officials believe relocating Birdsboro elementary students would be the best option.
But those at Sunday afternoon's rally disagreed.
"It needs to make more than dollars and cents. It needs to make educational sense. And I don't think this does," said Amy Hicks, a teacher.
"Classrooms will be overcrowded and students won't get the attention they need," said Ken Decker, a parent.
Some people also worry about the adverse affects it could have on the community as a whole.
"If that school lays there vacant, it doesn't help with the revitalization of this town," said Cindy McGee, Birdsboro Borough councilmember.
"We will lose a lot of people in our community if the school is not here. You'd want to move closer to the school your child would go to," said Amy Hall, a parent.
The district has delayed comment until the next public hearing, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday at Daniel Boone Middle School.
The general meeting starts at 6 p.m.
