READING, Pa. -

The Berks County Commissioners meeting on Thursday included a blast from the past.

The commissioners opened a time capsule from 1951.

The solid copper box included a county resolution from 1940. The document details William Essick's donation of 162 acres of land for construction of the old Berks Heim.

The box was discovered by crews tearing down the old Berks Heim. No county officials knew it was there.

"If you notice, it's kind of beat up a bit. The reason is, when the demolition contractor was removing the cornerstone, not knowing this was in here, at whatever height, this fell out of the cornerstone and was damaged," said Commissioner Christian Leinbach.

The good thing is nothing breakable was inside. The capsule contained letters, pictures and Reading Eagle and Reading Times newspapers from June 1951.
