Bear Creek making snow for ski season
Updated On: Dec 14 2012 05:28:42 AM CST
Bear Creek Mountain Resort is telling skiers to start getting their skis and jackets out of their closets. After last year's mild winter left them financial out in the cold, they're already off to a better start this season.
The slopes were green during the entire month of December 2011 because of mild weather. This melted away any hopes of the resort raking in a different kind of green.
Bear Creek Mountain Resort's general manager Mark Schroetel said the resort lost millions of dollars, impacting their bottom line.
"Cold weather is very important for us. If we don't have skiing, then we don't have an attraction for the winter," said Megan Diehl, marketing coordinator at Bear Creek Mountain Resort.
But this year, Bear Creek marketing coordinator Megan Diehl says they're busy making snow, thanks to the recent cold evening temperatures.
"Last night we were able to make snow. We're hoping to make snow again tonight and tomorrow night. We have a very advanced snow making system," said Diehl.
Bear Creek needs to blow snow for 72 hours under the right weather conditions, Diehl stated, in order for the resort to open the entire mountain.
"We're ready to go, so whenever Mother Nature decides to bring us a long enough cold snap, we are ready," said Diehl.
Last year, the entire mountain did not open up for skiers until the beginning of 2012. Now, Diehl stated, the resort is hoping it will not be that late.
"At this point, we do not have a schedule opening date. It seems like we might be getting some colder temperatures before the end of the month. So, we're really hoping to be open by Christmas," said Diehl.
