READING, Pa. -

The state is going to try to help Reading School District officials as they try to close a $40 million budget shortfall.

The Department of Education sent school officials a letter Thursday.

In the letter, the department said the executive director of the Berks County Intermediate Unit will assist the district with financial concerns.

The letter came after a meeting between the state officials and school officials on May 10.

State officials said it is still the district's responsibility to balance the budget on time.

Pa. Sen. Judy Schwank has been urging state education officials to assist the district.
