Argument at Christmas party leads to man assaulting girlfriend, police say

PEN ARGYL, Pa. -

An argument between a man and his girlfriend at a Christmas party escalated into a physical confrontation, officials said.

Ronald J. Washington was arrested for punching Nicole L. McElroy in the head and knocking her to the ground in the 200 block of  South Robinson Avenue in Pen Argyl, Northampton Co., at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, officials said.

McElroy cut her right elbow and scraped her left hand in the fall, officials said.

McElroy told police Washington became enraged during an argument at a holiday party and started to get physical with her, adding that Washington attacked her as she was walking away, officials said.

Washington, 40, of 110 West Main St., Pen Argyl, was arraigned early Wednesday morning on assault and harassment charges and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $15,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Jan. 7.
