Area's newest dog park slated for P'burg
Phillipsburg is going to the dogs.
At least that’s the vision Officer Louis DeLuca has for the town. During Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting he reported to council that he has secured a $10,000 grant to launch the first-ever dog park in the town’s Delaware River Park.
The town’s furry four-legged canines are in for a treat, no pun intended, as the park will undergo modifications to cater to their needs, which include erected fences, the removal of unused grills and the laying of mulch and the installation of signs, DeLuca said.
He also said that fundraising efforts secured about $1,500, but that the grant, acquired through the Petco Foundation, proved to be the top dog, and that the park could open by the end of October or early November, should council change an ordinance the prohibits dogs from being in town parks.
That likely won’t be an issue, as Councilmen Todd Tersigni and Bernie Fey, Jr. both praised DeLuca’s initiative.
“You’re to be commended for your diligent efforts,” Tersigni said.
“An outstanding job,” Fey Jr. added.
DeLuca, an 18-year member of the force, said his work with community policing spurred the park’s upcoming paw-inspired renaissance.
“I noticed that the southern end of the park has never really been utilized for some reason,” he told council. He also added that there will be separate parks for small and big dogs.
“All dogs entering the park would be permitted and their owners would sign a liability waiver,” DeLuca added. A fee would accompany acquisition of the permit.
Also during Tuesday night’s meeting, council approved various resolutions, including the awarding of a contract to Mobile Lifts in Collegeville, Pa, for the purchase of a 2012 truck equipped with an aerial lift and service body. The amount of the truck was $119,800.
President Randy Piazza, Sr. was absent.
