A man facing assault charges for a punch thrown on the streets of Easton two weeks ago could soon be in a lot more legal hot water.

EASTON, Pa. -

The victim of a brutal Christmas Eve assault has died.

Andres Ruiz-Avelizapa died Monday afternoon at Easton Hospital of his injuries, the Northampton County coroner said.

Ruiz-Avelizapa was attacked December 24 in Easton, the coroner said.

According to police, the incident happened around 1 a.m. in the 400 block of Northampton Street. Witnesses told police that Antonio Ortiz, 33, hit Ruiz-Avelizapa twice, who then hit the ground and lay motionless.

Inspector Matthew Gerould said police arrested Ortiz and charged him with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. Gerould said the district attorney will have to decide whether to add additional charges in light of Ruiz-Avelizapa's death.

Cruz, of 462 Northampton St., Easton, remains in the Northampton County Prison on $50,000 bail.
