Anchors Away: Hawk Mountain Sanctuary
Updated On: Sep 13 2010 05:03:39 AM CDT
We're spreading our wings for another volunteer assignment away from the anchor desk.
This month's "Anchors Away" feature takes us to the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Berks County, where a "flock" of 250 volunteers helps to keep things running.
"I feel like I'm going to be a surgeon today," said Rob. "You have surgery for me to do?"
"You don't have to be a surgeon, or even play one on TV, to help out at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton, Berks County," said Wendy.
"Now is the time of year when folks start flocking to the sanctuary in big numbers," Rob said.
"And anyone who wants a "bird's eye view" of the wildlife needs a place to park," said Wendy.
"When you're on the clock in the lot, you better stay on your toes," said Rob.
"They're parking themselves, Rob," Wendy said. "You're missing it!"
"They're parking themselves? I need to tell them where to go!" said Rob.
"It also helps to know a thing or two about the place," said Wendy.
"All I know is what I told those folks," said Rob. "Up there is the visitors center. Still, it's possible to stump even the most seasoned volunteers."
"Now back to those rubber gloves," said Wendy.
"But what about the main attraction, the birds?" asked Rob. "Well, volunteers can help visitors hoof it to two different look-outs, provided the appropriate footwear's in play."
"Way up there," said Wendy, "counting skills are critical. The sanctuary keeps a tally of all things feathered that fly by."
"But on this particular day," said Rob, "the only action we see is on the ground."
A snake slithered by.
"All the better, then, to just relax and enjoy the view," said Wendy.
Hawk Mountain accepts volunteers of all ages and abilities.
