Allentown School District considers school uniforms

Students in the Allentown School District could be shopping for the same school clothes next year.
The education committee approved a recommendation which will have every student wearing a school uniform.
We spoke with several students as they left school Friday afternoon for their opinions.
As expected many of them aren't too happy about a uniform policy but not everyone felt that way.
All you have to do is mention school uniforms to some students at William Allen High School in Allentown and you will get their opinion.
"I think it is great. I feel like it will be equal for everyone inside the school," said Claudio Alvalle, a senior at Allen.
"I don't feel like they are letting us express ourselves," said Allen student Cynthia Fernandez. "I know people sag their pants and they violate the dress code but I'm one of those people who actually follows the dress code."
Allentown School District Superintendent Russell Mayo says he believes the proposed move to uniforms will lower costs for parents and set the tone for learning.
"A comprehensive strategy for a safe learning environment and a serious learning environment," said Mayo.
Some students say the uniforms will stop people from getting ridiculed at school.
"We'll all be wearing the same stuff so nobody will be bullying each other," said Allen senior, Joselyn Villanueva. "So it will be a lot better."
"People do criticize but I feel like people shouldn't pay attention to that," said Fernandez.
As for learning in the classroom students say wearing a uniform will not make a difference.
"Whether you are dressed a completely different way or not, it's not going to make a difference," commented one student.
The final vote on school uniforms will be on January 24th.
The board will also decide if all students will wear them in the fall of 2013 or if it will be phased in over three years.
