Close to 2,500 U.S. adults were surveyed back in April by Harris Interactive, a company and market research firm that prides itself in delving into the American Life.

April's poll was on happiness and the findings show only 33% of those surveyed view their day to day life in a favorable light.

The happiness index was calculated by taking an average of those who strongly agreed with positive statements such as 'I'm optimistic about my future' and strongly disagreed with negative statements like 'My work is frustrating'.

African Americans rated the highest at 36%, followed by White Americans at 34% and Hispanic Americans at the lowest with 28%.

The poll has been conducted every year since 2008 and results have shown a drop on average.

The index indicates the political climate as well as a tough job market may have attributed to the decrease in overall happiness among Americans.
