EASTON, Pa. -

A 1.5-mile section of the D&L Trail at Freemansburg temporarily will be closed beginning August 8 for a major improvement project.

That section of trail will undergo a two-month resurfacing project that will widen it to eight feet and give it a smoother surface of rolled limestone. The project also includes stabilizing portions of the Lehigh Canal bank damaged by flooding in 2010.

The section of trail to be closed is between the  Bethlehem/Freemansburg boundary and  Nancy Run Creek in Freemansburg

The $280,000 project is being managed by the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor. Project partners are Freemansburg and District 5-0 of the state Department of Transportation. The work  is funded by the Federal Highway Administration through PennDOT, as a Transportation Enhancements Act grant.

“I’m happy to finally see this project get underway,” said Elissa Garofalo, D&L executive director. “The flooding that severely damaged the towpath delayed the improvement project. The wait for the completion of construction will be well worth it as we move toward completion of the D&L Trail between Bristol and Wilkes-Barre.”
